What You Need to Know About Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a procedure used by dermatologists to resurface skin that has been damaged by over-exposure to the sun, acne scarring or the effects of aging. It is sometimes referred to as the “lunchtime peel” because patients are able to have the skin treatment done within a very short period of time.

Dermatologists typically recommend this treatment for their patients who have skin damage resulting from fine lines, age spots, sun damage and acne. The procedure is very effective for correcting these blemishes, as well as increasing collagen production and speeding the turnover of skin cells. Facial pores are cleaned of blackheads and whiteheads and appear smaller as well.

How does Microdermabrasion Work?

The procedure begins with fine crystals worked into the skin followed by vacuuming of the skin to remove debris and dead skin cells. This process does not cause any pain to the patient, and after a few repetitions the skin texture and appearance is much improved.

Benefits of Microdermabrasion

* There are no negative side effects no matter how often the procedure is repeated.

* The procedure is completely safe for anyone whatever their race or skin type.

* The treatment requires no sedation or anesthesia since it is painless.

* It is the best choice for sensitive skin that could have a negative reaction to other types of chemical treatments.

* The short amount of time required to complete the treatment does not interfere with work schedules or other daily responsibilities.

What Patients can Expect During the Treatment

Each session of microdermabrasion can be completed within 30 minutes or less, and the skin may feel somewhat sensitive as if the patient has been outdoors in the wind or sun. The skin should always be moisturized with dermatologist approved products after the treatment is finished. Some patients may experience some peeling dependent on their skin type.

Certain people who have more extensive scarring caused by blemishes may require a a higher level of treatment. These patients could experience some redness and swelling that might last only a few hours or extend over several days if they have more sensitive skin.

How Many Treatments are Required for The Best Results?

As noted previously, microdermabrasion treatments are not invasive and the improvement is gradual. Taking into consideration the level of skin damage, up to a dozen treatments may be needed to achieve satisfactory results. The treatments are scheduled from two to four weeks apart so the treated skin has time to heal during the interim.

Positive Results That Patients can Expect

* Acne scars diminished or eliminated.

* Skin softened with a more youthful appearance.

* Skin’s appearance will be improved overall.

Only a few treatments are needed to achieve the above results, but your skin should respond by taking on a new glow after just one session. If you want more information about skin resurfacing, contact Microdermabrasion Clinic to schedule your appointment in San Diego.
